As November nears its end,so does term one.With about a month remaining,we are all getting ready for final projects,assessments,and exams.Good luck,but more importantly,plan well.To all students in the next couple of weeks,work hard and succeed.

11月份即将结束，本学期也接近尾声。剩下大约一个月的时间，师生们都在为期末项目、评估和考试做准备。祝愿同学们一切顺利，但在接下来的几周里更为重要的是，大家要做好计划，努力学习，争取获得好成绩。

In the coming weeks,in addition to attending to immediate tasks,we will also ask students to reflect on their visions for the future.We will ask them to think about and make decisions regarding both their immediate,and distant,futures.We will be asking students what they would like to achieve in term two and in 2023.Let's try to help them make wise decisions that will shape the following 3 habits.

1)Academic-how to be a better student by engaging with intellectual work.

2)Athletic-how to improve physical fitness by maybe running faster or getting stronger or even losing a few kgs if and only if necessary.

3)Artistic-how to become more creative by maybe writing a short book or painting or photographing a theme throughout the year or designing something.

Students in middle school years should focus on these three areas for improvement and start to think about what they would love to study in the future.Considering future directions will help them make a living doing what they enjoy.For students in higher grade levels that will need to start taking TOEFL/IELTS exams in the coming years and/or AP exams,start to think and prep now.Students should buy books on these,read them in advance.Yes,they can get a lot from a class,and they will,but if they read more and spend more time in these areas,they are sure to do better.If they are in an AP class,or a proficiency test class,encourage them to keep working hard.

中学阶段的同学们，请关注这三个需要改进的领域，并开始思考你们将来可能喜欢学习什么专业领域。同学们在这些方面不需要花很多时间，但考虑未来的方向目标将有助于你们从事自己喜欢做的事，拥有更美好的生活。而高年级的同学们，未来几年需要开始参加托福/雅思考试和AP考试的同学，现在就要开始思考和做准备。购买相应的考试教材资料。提前阅读。当然同学们可以在课堂中学到很多知识，但如果你进行更多阅读，花更多时间做好积累，你可能会做得更好。如果你正在修读AP等能力测试课程，请坚持下去。

Students,remember to bring your AP textbooks home on weekends and read them.Remember that the AP exam requires that you are comfortable reading at the level of an AP-approved text,and that the following years at university abroad get more difficult.So,spend time now developing for the future.Don't worry about the idea that PowerPoints are the way forward for academics.They help review the main points,but they are not the best way to shape deep memory and advanced understanding.This is not possible as they are mere bullet points reviewing key concepts.Use PowerPoints but don't think they are the ultimate way to study;they are mere support.Don't neglect to dig in and read ahead and read beyond the class.This is expected at university.Let’s prepare for that now.

7 Tips for TOEFL Writing from Steve

1)Use multiple paragraphs多段落写作

The classic 5 paragraph essay works very well and is easy to do.For example,the first paragraph should lay out the position and logic of the essay.Introduce the theme,then agree or disagree if that is called for.This depends on the task;dependent or independent,but regardless the essay should have multiple paragraphs.

经典的五段式写作实用性高，简单易行。第一段应该阐明文章的立场和逻辑。介绍主题，然后根据写作中实际需要，选择同意或不同意其观点。这取决于写作任务是否独立于其它任务，但无论如何，文章应该有多个段落。

2)Punctuation标点符号

A range of punctuation will help you gain a higher score since this will demonstrate that the grammar and syntax is more advanced.If you are linking ideas with a conjunction(e.g.,thus,therefore,hence,nevertheless,nonetheless,in addition to)they can often be punctuated with a comma and semicolon combination;hence,you can easily add a comma,a semicolon,an exclamation mark,or a question mark.Can't you?If you want to stress that something is the best idea ever,punctuate it and say that is the best solution ever!Remember these punctuation symbols and use them in your writing:

These will be a good starting point.

3)Use e.g.使用e.g.

Use e.g.,(exempli gratia)meaning"for example"and i.e.,(id est)meaning"in other words".You will often see these in writing(e.g.,all academic texts use them)and they will help you gain points on the writing section of the test(i.e.,I am recommending the use of these two devices).

使用e.g.（exemperi gratia）来表示“例如”，即i.e.（id est）来表示“也即是，换句话说”。你会在许多写作体裁中看到这些（e.g.比如，所有学术文章都会使用到），这些缩写将帮助你在考试的写作部分获得更高分数（i.e.也就是说，我建议大家使用这两种缩写）。

4)Use a few advanced adjectives,not just basic ones使用一些高级形容词，或者尽少使用基本形容词

Instead of big write gigantic,instead of nice write splendid,instead of smart write intellectual,instead of way write a paradigm,et cetera.If you are going for a top score add a couple of very rare words,such as pragmatic,stigmatized,decrepit,duality,predicament,or philanthropic.Words like these will help you be considered for a top score.

比如，形容“大”，使用“gigantic”来代替“big”；形容“美好”，使用“splendid”来代替“nice”；形容“聪明”，使用“intellectual”来代替“smart”；形容“方式，范式”，使用“paradigm”来代替“way”等等。如果你真的想在写作中获得高分，那就多用几个不常见的高阶词，比如：务实（pragmatic）、污名化（stigmatized）、衰老（decrepit）、二元性（duality）、困境（predicament）或慈善（Philanthropic）。像这样的词汇，会有助于学生获得更高分。

5)Use idiomatic expressions使用地道表达（习语）

There are so many wonderful idioms and I recommend you find a few that you like and remember these.Select idioms that are general enough to be used often in writing,and ones that are suitable in an academic context.

写作中有很多精彩的地道表达（习语），我建议同学们找到一些自己喜欢的习语，并用心牢记。选择积累在其它文章中高频使用和适合学术语境的习语。

6)Practice writing well in advance提前练习好写作

Write daily,in a journal,and develop writing fluency.Writing is a language skill and takes years to develop.So,take years and write regularly.When it comes time for the exam you will be more confident,better prepared,and simply a better writer.Write now,write often,write regularly and you will be just fine.

提前练习好写作。坚持每天写日记，提高写作流利度。写作是一种语言技能，需要以年为计的时间来培养发展这种能力。所以，提前几年来准备，规律定期地进行写作训练。到了考试的时候，你会更加自信，准备得更为充分，成为一个更好的写作者。现在就开始行动，有计划有规律地多写多练，写作能力一定会提升。

7)Read a lot多阅读

To be able to write better you need to know what good writing is.If you only write and never read this task will be very difficult.Read a range of literature and build your vocabulary both naturally and explicitly.This means that when you read regularly your vocabulary will grow as a result,naturally.But also,from time-to-time focus on expressions,phrases,or vocabulary that you like.Put them in a vocabulary book.

要想写得更好，你需要知道什么是好的写作。如果你只写而不阅读，将会很难真正掌握写作。阅读大量的文学作品，自然而明确地建立起自己的词汇库。这意味着当你经常阅读时，你的词汇量自然就会增长。而且，多关注你喜欢的习语表达、短语或词汇，并把它们整理进词汇书中。

There are many things you can do to get better for a proficiency test,above are 7 simple ways.I also understand that different people have different preferences,so do what you like and do what works best for you BUT do not do that to ignore your weaknesses.Approach your weaknesses first and strengthen the overall you.

同学们可以通过很多不同的方式在能力测试中提高自己的成绩，以上只是供参考的7个简单方法。我也明白，不同的人会有不同的偏好，所以选择你喜欢的方式方法，做对你最有效的事，但在学习的过程中请不要忽略自己的弱点短板。首先正视并补足自己的短板，并且加强自己的整体实力。
