WAS Rugby Fixture at Shanghai American School

5月22日周六清晨，常州威雅橄榄球队的队员和教练们早早聚集在一起，准备出发前往上海。我们将在浦西与上海美国学校进行一场橄榄球的友谊赛。由于疫情原因，这是常州威雅中学部橄榄球队18个月以来的首场校外比赛，自然是万众期待。学校派出了三支队伍，分别是高年级男子组、高年级女子组和U15男生组。此前，尽管队员们缺少比赛的实战经验，但我们每周都保持不间断的训练。在前往上海的途中，队员们的兴奋是显而易见的。尤其是当我们到达这次比赛场地，队员们换上了学校的队服，骄傲感更是油然而生。

After an early morning meet, the Wycombe Abbey Rugby teams boarded a coach bound to Shanghai for what was a highly anticipated rugby fixture against Shanghai American School Puxi, the first external rugby event in over 18 months. The school fielded three teams, Senior Boys’, Senior Girls’ and an U15 Boys’ squad, who have all been consistently training every week despite the lack of fixtures. The excitement of the pupils on the journey to Shanghai was tangible, and as we arrived at SAS, the teams took great pride in donning their school jerseys and taking to the field.

橄榄球比赛以国际十人制的形式展开，分上下半场。每半场限时12分钟。高年级的男孩子们率先吹响了比赛的号角。

Each team played 2 10s fixtures against their opposition, consisting of 12-minute halves. The Senior Boys were the first to kick off.

Senior Boys'

In the Senior Boys’ matches, they were faced with a steep learning curve after conceding a few early tries in the first half. Nevertheless, the pupils kept their heads held high, embodying the school ethos of strong sportsmanship, and in the second half mounted a fierce comeback having learnt and acted upon the areas of weakness highlighted from the earlier half. The boys then continued to develop their game moving into the second match, pulling through fatigue, playing to their absolute best and giving their all in what were two incredibly exciting and encouraging games of rugby, and even managed to come away with a number of spectacular breakaways tries from N. Ni (Y13 Elgar), to the cheering of the spectating U15s.

U15 Boys'

在观看了高年级男子组的比赛后，U15队员们展开了自己的比赛。终于可以将训练中一直练习的技巧付诸实践了！第一场比赛是近距离交战。这对男孩子们来说大大增加了球的截断难度，难以实现有效防守。Philpott同学(九年级Hawking)成功地数次突围，但很遗憾，最终全队还是以微弱的差距与胜利失之交臂。

Having watched the Senior Boys performance, the U15s sought to develop their own games and implement all that they had been practicing in training into their play. The first fixture was an incredibly close and well fought match, with the boys working incredibly hard in defense to secure the breakdowns, as well as managing to consistently prove to be a threat by successfully counter rucking. In attack the boys were able to make several successful offensives through the breaks made by C. Philpott (Y10 Hawking), only narrowly missing out on the win.

第二场比赛开始了，男孩子们都雄心勃勃地，带着必胜的决心返回到球场。在一开球时便全方面占据了优势，并且一直保持到了最后哨声吹响。在高年级学长学姐们的见证下，U15可以说是将这场反败为胜赢得相当漂亮。全场观众为之欢呼喝彩，尤其是两位王同学(八年级 Hawking；九年级 Elgar)的表现令人印象深刻。八年级的王同学(Hawking)通过出色的70米冲刺而夺得宝贵的一分，另一位九年级的王同学(Elgar)则是在掩护团队和控制防线上付出了巨大的努力。此外，还有两位学生也值得表扬，Clarke同学(七年级Y8 Blake)和Martin同学(七年级Y8 Elgar)，因为他们接受了更高年级组的挑战。

In the second fixture, however, the boys took back to the pitch with a determination to come away with a victory and from the kickoff dominated the opposition in all aspects of the game. As the final whistle blew, with the Senior Boys’ and Girls’ watching, the U15 were able to celebrate a well-deserved victory against what was an extremely challenging opposition. A massive congratulations goes to the whole team. In this match T. Wang (Y9 Hawking) was highlighted for a superb 70m sprint to score a try, and T. Wang (Y10 Elgar) for putting in a tremendous amount of effort in covering the breakdowns and controlling the defensive line. As well as these two pupils, X. Clarke (Y8 Blake) and T. Martin (Y8 Elgar) were commended for stepping up to the challenge of playing for an older team.

No.3高年级女子组

Senior Girls'

女子组比赛初始，我们的女孩子们就快速意识到了她们正面临着怎样强大的敌手。但她们随之很快地进行了调适，并开始争取整场比赛的主导权。女子组由八到十二年级的学生组成。这些队员中有些已经有了好几年的实战经验，有些学生则经验较少。在两场困难而激烈的橄榄球比赛中，每个女孩都将自己置身在最前线拼搏，她们齐心协力、奋力争先。

In the girls’ fixtures, the team quickly realized that they too were playing against a formidable opposition, however, were quickly able to adapt to this and begin to take control of areas of the game. The girls’ team was made up of pupils ranging from Y9-Y13, with some girls having played for several years and others less experienced. Every girl put their body on the line, banding together to keep their heads high in two difficult and physical matches of rugby.

女孩子们很快地适应了比赛，并且能与对手分庭抗礼。通过团结一心的努力，以及王同学(十二年级Dove) 和刘同学(九年级Fonteyn)个人精彩的表现，威雅队成功实现了比赛的逆转。女孩子们为自己和学校赢得荣誉的同时，也通过这次的宝贵经历，对这类比赛有了更深刻的认识。这对于她们晋级今后的比赛而言，有着深远积极的影响。

The girls quickly settled into the game and were able to match the opposition physically, working incredibly hard as a team and with some brilliant individual performances from D. Wang (Y13 Dove) and R. Liu (Y10 Fonteyn). The girls did themselves and the school credit, coming away from the matches with a greater understanding of the game that will serve them well as a positive experience moving forward into their next fixtures.

我们对十二年级的球员们致以热烈的祝贺，并感谢他们作为中学低年级球员们的“良师益友”，慷慨给予了他们指导和帮助，并鼓励他们发挥出了最好的水平。我们希望当他们升入大学后依然能坚持打橄榄球，享受橄榄球竞技带给他们的乐趣。

In both Senior teams, a massive congratulations goes to the Y13 players for their input and role in helping mentor the younger players and encourage them to play their best, and who we hope continue to play rugby when they move onto University.

激烈的橄榄球比赛氛围直至暮色四合才逐渐硝烟散去，学生们快速吃完汉堡后坐上了返程的巴士。他们一个个头抬得高高的，无不为他们自己的表现而感到自豪。他们期待着能很快再次回到橄榄球赛场比拼，并且比以往更热切地想返校之后投入到训练中。学生们的精彩表现是学校体育部辛勤付出的最佳证明。

At the end of the day the pupils got back onto the bus with their heads held high, incredibly proud of their performances and happy to be back out on the rugby field. They served to be a testament to the school’s PE Department. Having picked up a quick after match burger, the pupils returned to WAS Changzhou, and are straight back into training even more eagerly than before.
