Chinese department
Last Friday, teachers of the Chinese Language Program at BASIS International School Guangzhou held a series of activities to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is one of the four traditional Festivals in China.
Lantern riddles
In the Chinese style walkway connecting Building one to Building two, lanterns were dancing in the breezy air, reminding people of the prosperous ancient Capital of the Northern Song Dynasty, Bianjing. In the commercial market beside the Bianhe River, people were often seen strolling happily in the street. The lanterns turned out to be a riddle guessing event prepared for the Mid-Autumn celebration. During lunch break, students and teachers alike enjoyed answering riddles to win prizes and learn about traditional Chinese culture.
Mid-Autumn handcrafts
Accompanied by sweet melodies, Grade 1 students began to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. For about half a month, they have been observing the moon while drawing its shape to demonstrate how it changes over time. As it became almost full, the students excitedly said that the Mid-Autumn Festival was coming soon! After sharing their favorite mooncakes, they began to create their own handmade mooncakes with various kinds of filling.
When the Mid-Autumn Festival Rabbit met the Grade 2 children, it couldn’t go away! The children turned white rabbits into colorful rabbits. Then, by using shadow puppetry, they changed the color rabbits into moving rabbits. Excited children brought their rabbits to life, and even participated in a rabbit battles with their desk mates.
Grade 3 students showed their own wisdom and talent in the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival. In the activity, each group of children were asked to complete six clay moon cakes together in a limited amount of time. They also answered questions about the Mid-Autumn Festival and participated in a poem recital competition with given themes. It was a fun and educative experience for the children.
Unique moon cake box
"Small cakes in the shape of the moon with delicious fillings". This is a metaphor written by the great writer Su Dongpo about a traditional cuisine without which the Chinese people cannot celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival: mooncakes. On Friday, the students in Grades four, five, and six had a wonderful and crafty Mid-Autumn Festival celebration.
At the beginning of the activity, the teachers introduced the origin and development of the Mid-Autumn Festival to the students, as well as the relevant festive customs. The stories allowed student to have a deeper understanding of the Mid-Autumn festival culture. After this, they began the second activity: making gift boxes for mooncakes. The otherwise ordinary boxes were transformed into works of art through the creative hands of the students as they drew exquisite patterns, added exquisite paper-cuts, and wrote elaborate blessings onto them. Finally, students put the mooncakes they selected from home into boxes and took them into raffle box. With great excitement, they students tasted the mooncakes drawn from the raffle box that their friends prepared for them.
Moon poems
Students from grade 7 to grade 9 demonstrated their Chinese language skills and creative talent in the Mid-Autumn poem-writing event. The event was divided into three competitions: "Zhao Wen", "Fu Qu" and "Xiang Chou". Students worked in groups and wrote poems together about the theme. After the first person finished writing a poem, the second person continued writing, and when the third student began to write, he could only see the lines of the previous student, but he couldn’t see the line written by the first student. This went on until the last student in the group finished writing the poem. Students had to think fast in this collaborative game which ended with some truly hilarious lines. The game brought students closer together as they learnt about the lasting charm of traditional Chinese culture.
Greeting Cards
On the day before the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, the expat teachers in High School received a surprise gift: traditional Chinese handicrafts made by Grade 10 students such as lanterns and creative greeting cards. The unique red lanterns reflect the warm light and delicate patterns, allowing the teachers to catch a glimpse of the uniqueness and novelty of traditional Chinese culture. They were also surprised about the colorful and creative cards filled with best wishes. We hope these wishes will help to create a happy holiday for the teachers.
Pitch-pot
Invented in the Spring and Autumn period of China 2000 years ago, pitch-pot was originally a banquet game played among elites and scholars and later has become a popular recreational pastime.
To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, 11th and 12th graders played pitch-pot in their Chinese classes. They were divided into teams, working with each other on the best ways to throw arrows into their canisters. The team who got the most arrows in its canister won the game!
Through the game, students not only had fun, but also had better understanding on the traditional Chinese culture.
Traditional Fashion Show
Mr. Min Yu
Teachers and students dressed up themselves in beautiful Hanfu and Cheongsam to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Please stay with us and recall the gorgeous moments of the traditional fashion show!
Boarding Activities on the Mid-Autumn Festival
Mr. Pengfei Dai
With the gentle breeze and moonlight, BIGZ extended a warm welcome to our boarders on the Mid-Autumn Festival. The school canteen, with great sincerity, prepared special dishes and mooncakes to pamper the taste buds of our students, and House Parents organized lots of fun games and activities after the dinner feast.
With ring tossing, shuttlecock kicking and treasure hunting, the campus was filled with joy and laughter of boarders. Although our boarders were not in the company of their families, they felt connected with their peers through the games and activities they enjoyed together.
The night with a full moon grew late, and students went to bed with happy memories. After the refreshing Mid-Autumn Festival Holiday, students will continue on their journey full of energy!
