STEM

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM is an interdisciplinary approach to learning. Students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between the classroom and the world around them.

The importance of STEM education is emphasized by the Next Generation Science Standards, which were designed to improve how students comprehend and apply science. This year, STEM is focused primarily on project-based learning in the classroom. The projects and activities incorporate technology and engineer to emphasize the application of science and prepare students for future classes.

What separates STEM from the traditional science and math education is the blended learning environment and showing students how scientific and engineer methods can be applied to everyday life. It teaches students computational thinking and focuses on the real world applications of problem solving.

This year, I am lucky to get the chance to teach STEM. It is a very important subject to be taught because of the rise in technology but also the demand in STEM careers. I was born and raised in the DC Metropolitan area in the US. While I was in high school, I had the opportunity to take many science classes, because of a unique program the school provided. Ultimately, it sparked my dream to want to be a science teacher. I went to college and studied Environmental Science. I also studied Education so I could become a qualified teacher. Afterwards, I pursed my masters in Environmental Science and Policy before returning to the classroom. I’ve been a teacher for over 5+ years, but hands down, this year is definitely my favorite!

今年，我很幸运有机会教STEM。这是一门非常重要的课程，因为技术的发展以及STEM职业的需求。我在美国的华盛顿大都会区出生和长大。在我上高中的时候，我有机会参加许多科学课程，因为学校提供了一个独特的课程。最终，它激发了我想成为一名科学教师的梦想。我上了大学，学习环境科学。我还学习了教育，它让我可以成为一名合格的教师。之后，我在成为老师之前还获得了环境科学与政策硕士学位。我当老师已经5年多了，但今年绝对是我最喜欢的一年！

Science & Maths

Science and math provide us all with the foundations for life, and that is the reason why they are core subjects in schools curricula. Learning these subjects in English has a lot of benefits for pupils. For instance, as they enjoy learning about animals, plants, and different species, they can look up English encyclopedias and independently research information useful to their personal learning journey.  Learning mathematics in English can help them build an understanding of simple math, furthermore, it can enable them to further apply of their mathematical knowledge in international schools and universities.

科学和数学为我们提供了生活的基础，这就是为什么它们是学校课程中的核心科目。用英语来学习这些科目对学生有很多好处。例如，由于他们喜欢学习动物、植物和不同的物种，他们可以查阅英语百科全书并独立研究对他们学习有用的信息。用英语学习数学可以帮助他们建立对简单数学的理解，而且可以使他们在国际学校和大学中进一步应用数学知识。

At SESID, we use the Big Science book series from Pearson which is aligned with the Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, building both core language skills and scientific practices. In this program, we apply the 5E methodology which is a systematic approach for discovering, exploring, questioning and understanding the world around us. The books’ content is classified into four groups;

-Science, Engineering, and Technology

- Life Science

- Earth Science

- Physical Science

在SESID，我们使用Pearson的大型科学书籍系列，该系列与通用核心标准和下一代科学标准保持一致，培养核心语言技能和科学实践。在本项目中，我们采用5E方法，这是一种发现、探索、质疑和理解我们周围世界的系统方法。书的内容分为四类：科学，工程和技术；生命科学；地球科学；物理科学。

In this program, students will be assessed at the end of each unit, and they will work on a project or an experiment while studying each unit.

For English Maths, SESID developed its own multimedia application called Mathtopia which enables students to benefit from a fun and user friendly environment for learning English Maths. Our main focus in this program is to give students a chance to learn mathematical expressions and concepts in English and be able to comprehend mathematical word problems in English which will prepare them for higher educational stages. For Mathtopia, SESID is in a close collaboration with the local Chinese Maths teachers so the students can learn the same contents in both English and Chinese.  

对于英语数学，SESID开发了自己的多媒体应用程序Mathtopia，使学生能够受益于一个有趣且用户友好的英语数学学习环境。本课程的主要重点是让学生有机会学习英语中的数学表达式和概念，并能够理解英语中的数学问题，这些为他们进入日后更高的教育阶段做好准备。对于Mathtopia，SESID与当地的中教数学教师密切合作，以便学生可以学习相同的中英文内容。

I feel so lucky and proud to be part of SESID and the opportunity to teach Science and Maths since 2018. I’ve been eager to learn more about scientific topics since I was a child. This enthusiasm led me to study engineering at university and helped me understand how science and technology can be vital and helpful subjects. I was born and raised in Rasht city which is located in northern Iran. I’ve been teaching for 8 years, and the last 6 years were in Shanghai, but my time at SESID have been very rewarding.

能成为SESID的一员，并有机会从2018年开始教授科学和数学，我感到非常幸运和自豪。从孩提时代起，我就渴望了解更多关于科学的话题。这种热情使我在大学里学习工程学，并帮助我理解科学和技术是多么重要和有用的学科。我在伊朗北部的雷什特城出生和长大。我已经教书8年了，过去的6年是在上海，在SESID教书的时光对我来说非常宝贵。

I believe the children need a comfortable, supportive, and creative atmosphere for learning and I always try my best to provide such an environment in my classes. In my Science and Maths classes, I use updated resources so the students will benefit from the latest findings in science and technology. I also use multimedia materials and various types of class activities to support my lessons and make the class more enjoyable for my students. In the words of Dr. Seuss: 'Children want the same things we want; To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted'!

我相信孩子们需要一个舒适、支持和创造性的学习氛围，我总是尽力在课堂上提供这样一个环境。在我的科学和数学课上，我使用最新的资源，让学生从科学和技术的最新发现中受益。在我的课堂中，我还使用多媒体材料和各种类型的课堂活动，使我的学生更享受课堂。用苏斯博士的话说：“孩子们想要的东西和我们想要的一样；去笑，去挑战，去娱乐，去快乐！
